Suppose one morning an armed person breaks into your house and kills your mom and daughter. You’re able to kill the intruder, but when you run outside there is an angry crowd of neighbors, many of them armed, surrounding your house and threatening to kill you. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that you’ve been a very bad neighbor. You’ve kicked their dogs, insulted their children, maybe even threatened some of them and occasionally blocked their driveways. Which of the following actions would you like the police to take?
1. Plead for you and the neighbors to come together for a negotiation.
2. Demand all the neighbors return home, then leave.
3. Shoot two armed neighbors and leave.
4. Bring in a SWAT team and give the unarmed neighbors a limited amount of time to leave before they start arresting and killing anyone who resists.
Now suppose you’re the state of Israel.
Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you've been a very good neighbor. You've provided opportunities for your hostile neighbors to find remunerative work on your property. You've provided them access to utilities. You've provided them access to your hospitals. You've offered them almost everything they claim they want, and are rebuffed without the ceremony of a counter-offer. They hold daily rallies in support of killing your family. They celebrate the people who did murder members of your family.
