Israel, One Year After
At a time when I’m starting to lose faith in American ingenuity, Israel still accomplishes amazing things
As the Jewish New Year is here, and we Jews contemplate our lives and particularly our deeds over the past year, I've been thinking, as have most Jews, about October 7.
Last year around this time, I wrote about the foolish political and social divide among Jews in Israel and America. We recently commemorated the fast of Tisha B’Av. The Second Temple was destroyed on that day, according to the Talmud, not because of the Roman attacks but because of internal divisions that weakened and distracted the Jews. While Rome attacked, the Jews spread hatred and blame amongst each other. I warned that our modern enemies, always looking for such weakness, would choose this time to attack. And then the Nova Music Festival massacre happened.
Great. An encouraging piece. Much needed, now that hundreds of Iranian missiles are falling on Israel.
A Middle Eastern student with an Arabic name showed up to class today wearing a shirt featuring the big word "PALESTINE" and adorned with the flag of the same fictitious entity. She was ignored by everyone else.
Pray. Remember the story of President Lincoln during the Civil War, when the Union had just won a battle, and one of his supporters said to him what you wrote in the article: "God is on our side." Lincoln replied, "It is more important for us to be on God's side."
